Christoph Primm

Artist portrait

Christoph Primm, born in Berlin in 1947, studied Romance and Slavic Studies at the Free University of Berlin. After graduating, he initially worked as a documentary researcher at the German Development Institute and later moved to the press documentation department of the German Bundestag, where he worked until 2012. At the same time, he discovered his passion for painting: from 2006 to 2011, he studied at the Akademie für Malerei Berlin in the class of Ute Wöllmann and became her master student in 2011. From 2011 to 2014, Primm was a member of the ROOT producers' gallery at Savignyplatz, and since 2014 he has been represented as an artist by the ROOT gallery. Christoph Primm still lives and works in his native city of Berlin.

Painting

My painting grows in layers. Liquid paint at the beginning, then oil paint, applied undiluted with palette knives. Areas of colour are created through drying and renewed layering, and lines are created through their convergence, but not from the observation of reality. Form follows colour. The same colour tones in series or diptychs, almost always square and rectangular. My painting does not want to limit itself to a single picture format, a single picture space. I paint on the floor, from all sides. A depth of colour space is created, not a perspective that could be derived from what I have seen before, forms that cannot be pinned down to any particular objectivity. Two picture formats that respond to each other in the interplay of their colour tones. The viewer is free to ask questions.
