Christoph Primm

Artist portrait

Christoph Primm's strength is the tension between colour and structure. He layers them into complex compositions and makes the painterly itself the object of contemplation.

At first glance, Christoph Primm's paintings are gestural abstractions. At second glance, one can discover equally symbolic elements in the pictures.

The artistic focus is on the painting process, the unconscious or spontaneous expression of psychological states. This applies to Christoph Primm when he says that he is in the picture or that the picture gives him the title or that he reacts directly to the shapes and colours.

In Primm's work, we find ourselves ... in an intermediate realm of representational and informal pictorial space, reminiscent of the paintings of the CoBrA group. And it is no coincidence that Primm counts the Danish painter Asger Jorn, a founding member of the CoBrA group, among his role models.

Christoph Primm's pictures are not about recognition, not about a narrative. It's all about the sound of the colours and how the juxtaposition and overlapping of the colours makes the shapes dance.

My painting

My painting grows in layers. Liquid paint at the beginning, then oil paint, applied undiluted with palette knives. Areas of colour are created through drying and renewed layering, and lines are created through their convergence, but not from the observation of reality. Form follows colour. The same colour tones in series or diptychs, almost always square and rectangular. My painting does not want to limit itself to a single picture format, a single picture space. I paint on the floor, from all sides. A depth of colour space is created, not a perspective that could be derived from what I have seen before, forms that cannot be pinned down to any particular objectivity. Two picture formats that respond to each other in the interplay of their colour tones. The viewer is free to ask questions.
