My artistic position shows a way of making nature shine through art.
In my painting, I pose elementary questions about the interplay of forms in nature. This very often happens directly outdoors in nature as plein air painting. The key concepts of my painting are structure, materiality and colour. Analogous to the driving forces in nature, my painting shows a poetry of liquefaction, flowing, colour movements and transitions. I want to transfer the real vegetative context into a fictitious pictorial world. Painterly structures, tensions such as filigree - gestural, bold - thin colour, drawing - painting are the driving force and sensual stimulus. At the same time, the strongly composed painting process is characterised by a high sensual appeal in a variety of movement, colour and tension.
The sensuality of colour is the hallmark of my painting.
The starting point for my painting is classic oil paint, which offers me the maximum range of colours from thin glaze layers to impasto surfaces. I often work alla prima, combining fine and elaborate drawings with the impasto oil paint or transferring the techniques of thin watercolour painting into the oil painting, for example by pouring thin oil paint onto thick oil paint and thus exploring the limits of this technique. Only the alla prima technique makes this possible. Parallel to oil painting and watercolour, I like to experiment with different types of paper, which I have brought back from my travels in China and Madagascar and which I sometimes combine with oil painting. Here, too, it is the materiality of the thick, handmade papers from Nepal, the flower papers from Madagascar or the fine Chinese papers that has a direct influence on my work and inspires me.
Although landscape marks the starting point of my painting, I work abstractly. In the landscapes that I paint plein-air, I am concerned with a surrogate of all the impressions of this landscape, which I translate into painting. I expand the pictorial world into the open unknown, enigmatically cosmic, developing a poetic, narrative pictorial language with high colour intensity and aesthetics.
I transcribe the sensual offerings of the landscape into painterly textures. "Text" and "texture" are to be understood quite literally. So it is also logical that words have spread directly into my latest paintings. Poetry has always been an important artistic accompaniment for me. The pictorial language, borrowed and condensed from an observation of nature, inspires me to create my own images.
