Born in Ulm in 1964, the sculptor studied under Professor Jan Koblasa at the Muthesius Academy of Fine Arts in Kiel after training as a stonemason and stone sculptor. In 2012, he received his doctorate (DLA, Doctor of Liberal Arts) from the Pécs University of Music and Fine Arts in Hungary under Professor Colin Foster.
Regular participation in art KARLSRUHE, 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2020 with Galerie ROOT. The artist lives in Kiel.

Jo Kley is a stone sculptor par excellence. His immense creative drive has produced an impressive body of work. Since 1998, he has been pursuing his art concept "KleyCity" with the idea of erecting a tower sculpture in as many countries around the world as possible in order to forge a bond of international understanding. Since then, he has taken part in more than 60 international sculpture symposia in 26 countries, some of which he organised and curated himself. Around 100 of his monumental sculptures can be found in public spaces in Germany and in 25 other countries from the Far East, the Middle East and Europe to North and South America. He does not see himself as an inventor of new forms - ladders, towers, knots, spirals and crystals have accompanied mankind since time immemorial. They are real forms, but also allegorical, metaphorical and symbolic figures. What is exciting about Jo Kley's sculptures is how movement and energy materialise in the stone. The hard stone is in motion, pulsating and dynamic. The filigree protrusions in some of his sculptures emphasise this lightness right into the sharp corners. The different stones impress with their impressive sensuality and power, some of them with highly polished surfaces.
