The two artists in the exhibition share a common interest in nature. Pure nature is no longer available in our urbanised landscape, which is shaped by man and his needs. And so the works of the two artists each show their own view of what characterises our cultural landscape today. In Juliane von Arnim's work, it is the new network of sparsely populated areas with their agricultural buildings, while Norbert Klaus places the artisanal technique of gardening and hedge trimming at the centre of his art. Both develop a contemporary aesthetic and formal language around these central points of their art. In the exhibition, there is not only an exciting dialogue between the oval cut surfaces in the space of Norbert Klaus' brushwood sculptures and the oval areas of colour in paintings such as "Waldlichter" by Juliane von Arnim, but also an overarching dialogue on the theme of wild / tamed nature; nature / renaturation.
Juliane von Arnim her work is primarily dedicated to nature in the form of landscape paintings or views of plants and insects. She traces the unusual in the familiar. Strange colour and light moods are the hallmark of her pictures. The image details and lighting of the rural scenarios, deserted landscapes and places appear unusual, especially as her attention is focussed on special buildings and lonely farmsteads, which convey a peculiar atmosphere of tense tranquillity.
Norbert Klaus works with brushwood. His working materials are the brushwood rods from bushes and hedges, from shrubs, which he first sticks together to make compacted wickerwork from branches. Each type of brushwood follows its own laws of processing, collecting and drying depending on the seasons and growth phases. This is followed by the formative trimming. The sculpture with its fragmented, brittle surface is created. The form-enclosing surfaces consist of a multitude of round and oval cut surfaces. The basic vocabulary of the brushwood sculptures are sphere, cube, cuboid, cylinder, lying, standing, hanging. The sculptures live from the contradiction of geometry and nature, primal - standardised, rounded - smooth. Similar contrasts can also be found in his graphic works. The working material brushwood is used in a new way in his embossed prints. The original forms are retained, while light and shadow determine the formal order of the paper reliefs. Norbert Klaus lives and works in rural surroundings near Ulm, he has converted an old farmhouse into a studio and his working material comes from the surrounding landscape.
