Andreas Amrhein

Artist portrait

I was born in Marburg in 1963, grew up in Liberia/West Africa and studied fine arts in Berlin, London, Malmö and Chicago. Being on the road has had a significant influence on my work.

My last study trips took me to China and to southern Mongolia in 2022. On this last trip, I was particularly impressed by the vastness of the Gobi and the nomadic culture.

In my art I appreciate the mix of abstraction, comic, pop and hyper-realistic depiction.

In my strongly coloured works I put drawing next to painting, I mix abstract ideas and ornament, gesture with three-dimensionally worked figuration.

My work

Landscapes, created in transparent colours, often form the background of the picture, on which a plane with drawings is created and in the vicinity of which, since 2005, realistically painted porcelain figures can be found.

In my more recent works, the "hybrid figures", I merge human figures with animal heads to create a new being.
