Vernissage of the exhibition "Auftritt" with paintings by Marlies Ziemke

Dear friends of the ROOT Gallery,

Marlies Ziemke is a graduate of the Academy of Painting Berlin, having completed her studies in 2018 as a master student of Ute Wöllmann. A lot has happened since then, including being a member of the female artist group K11, which is active and successful on the art market. Marlies Ziemke has also been a lecturer at the Akademie für Malerei Berlin since 2020. This weekend she is also offering an online course via ZOOM on the subject of "Portrait", Sat 27 Jan. and Sun 28 Jan. from 10 am to 1 pm and 2 pm to 5 pm. If you are interested, please send an email to a-f-m-b@web.de or T: 030 45086100

I am delighted to be exhibiting her latest paintings in the ROOT gallery and cordially invite you to the vernissage on Monday 22 January at 6 pm. The artist will be present and I will take this opportunity for an artist talk to give you an understanding of the paintings.

The portrait and its emotions
Marlies Ziemke combines two extremely different painterly viewpoints in her pictures. She paints abstract, floral structures, surfaces, ornaments, gives colours free rein, condenses them. Painting here is purely an end in itself and does not want to show anything other than painting and colours. On the other hand, Marlies Ziemke paints faces that she associates with this painting. She gives them a strong expression and an emotional radiance that shows us the feelings behind the face. She is interested in an emotionally charged border area that requires a tightrope walk in today's world. But that is precisely what makes her pictures so exciting! When looking at her pictures, questions immediately resonate: How much depiction of romance, femininity and desire is actually permissible today? Marlies Ziemke skilfully and with great sensitivity combines the colours with one another and creates emotionally charged spaces in which her portraits are entangled, but which are also created precisely out of this. Strong pictures by a strong painter!

I am looking forward to an inspiring evening,

Yours, Ute Wöllmann
