Artistic position

The central element in Susanna Niederer's work is the ellipse, a strictly and precisely constructed form. In her work, Susanna Niederer uses the symbol of the ellipse to depict emptiness. Sculptures, objects and installations made from a wide variety of materials emerge from this background. Her works are characterised by a great calm and strength that arises from meditation on a single form. Despite her rigour, Susanna Niederer exploits the entire spectrum of artistic possibilities. In terms of content, she ranges from concrete abstraction to landscape figurations, for example when standing ellipsoids can be associated with stylised groups of trees. In terms of sculpture, the works range from bronze, wood and paper to foam materials. The ellipse as a drawn form in the surface, as well as bent with a wire as a dynamic line in space, as a large and heavy spatial body or light as a feather as discs.
