Christiane Budig - Glass sculptures
David Rothenfels - Painting
Vernissage: Thursday 16 January 2020, 8 pm
Exhibition duration: 17 January - 7 February 2020

What David Rothenfels and Christiane Budig have in common is that they place people and their interaction with the world around them at the centre of their artistic exploration. Christiane Budig works with glass, a fragile, transparent material. She uses it to create fragments of the human body that envelop an inner void like an outer skin. The sculptures are extremely fragile, they seem transparent, but the glass distorts the view. And everything is unclear despite the transparency. The boundaries between inside and outside can no longer be precisely defined. This is precisely the interface with David Rothenfels. As a placeholder and prototype of a man in the modern business world, David Rothenfels' pictures always feature himself. David Rothenfels deals with the façade of our modern society, the ideal of beauty, the dictates of fashion and modern business behaviour. His pictures tell of the world behind this façade, a strange and surreal world. His gaze is sober and sharp, as is his translation into painting. Christiane Budig combines glass with many other materials, such as rubber, metal, wood and mirrors. She increases the expressiveness of her sculptures through this contact of materials. In David Rothenfels' paintings, reflections and mirrored surfaces thematise the strangeness of the world without contact and warmth.
