Since the beginning of the war in Ukraine, artist Andrea Interschick and the two artists EL EGO and Oliver Kelm have been intensively analysing the news and images that reach us in Germany. A few days after 24 February, Andrea Interschick saw a newspaper photograph of a soldier who had been killed, probably sacrificing his life to prevent a Russian tank from continuing its journey towards Kiev. She couldn't get this person out of her mind and this gave her the impetus for the "Kobsar" series of pictures and the concept for the three-person exhibition of the same name.
In Ukraine, artists who pass on historical events, cultural ideas and myths are called "kobsars". They are comparable to medieval minstrels, but the best-known Ukrainian writer Taras Svechenko (1814-61) was also labelled a "kobsar", as were his poems, which also deal with the dissociation of Ukraine from the Russian Tsarist Empire.
Visitors to the exhibition, whose works deliberately go beyond mere documentation of the horror, suffering and destructiveness of war, are given the opportunity to reflect and exchange views on the subject matter. Creative work processes offer wonderful opportunities to deal with the feelings and thoughts they trigger. Through artistic design, incomprehensible things become tangible and disturbing images and frightening truths become visible.
