In Ellen Mäder-Gutz's work, it is the grown wood of a tree that defines the form of the sculpture that emerges from the trunk. It is the tension between the solid material wood and the filigree and light architecture of the blossoms and buds that Ellen Mäder-Gutz thematises in her sculptures.
In Irmgard Bornemann's work, it is the unusual combination of the surface structures of the impasto oil painting with the relief-like structure of the tree bark that creates great tension. The tree bark blends into the relief structures of the furrowed oil paint almost mimetically camouflaged. Where does the material-like bark structure begin, where does the painting end? Irmgard Bornemann thus transfers a creative concept from nature directly into painting.

Irmgard Bornemann
A sessile oak tree was felled in the German landscape area of Göhrde. The wood from this tree was processed by 25 people (artists, craftsmen, musicians, therapists, etc.) in a variety of ways. The results will be exhibited at various unusual locations over the next few years.
Irmgard Bornemann was interested in the bark of this tree, which she collaged directly into her paintings. The crusty bark structures fit into her artistic concept of impasto painting. Her painting was originally inspired by a textured fabric wallpaper with velvet birds, which she collaged into her pictures. The motifs as well as the colour and texture of the wallpaper thus found their way directly into her paintings, which led to her impasto and monochrome application of paint. In her new paintings of bark collages, it is sometimes no longer possible to distinguish between the structure of the bark and the structure of the colour. The surface texture of her paintings is very exciting and leads to new visual experiences.

Irmgard Bornemann: born in Berlin in 1952
2007-12 Studied at the Akademie für Malerei Berlin; graduated in 2012 and master student of Andreas Amrhein; 2010 founding member of the ROOT producers' gallery at Savignyplatz and its co-owner until 2014
Lives and works in Lüchow-Dannenberg.
Public purchases: Federal Foreign Office Collection
Ellen Mäder-Gutz
Floral motifs are the leitmotif of Ellen Mäder-Gutz's sculptures, "...whereby it is never about the mere depiction of flowers and plants. Rather, the artist reduces the forms and structures of botanical events to the essentials in order to visualise the invisible lines of force of nature" (Dr. Martin Feltes, Chairman of the Kunstkreis Cloppenburg e.V.). Ellen Mäder-Gutz's colourfully glazed wooden sculptures achieve both an external and haptic concentration on the simple form through the intensive treatment of the wooden surface.

Ellen Mäder-Gutz:
Born in Bergfelde in 1954; 1973-75 apprenticeship as a jewellery belt maker in Jüterbog; 1975-77 evening studies in graphic design at the Berlin-Weißensee School of Art; 1977-82 studies in sculpture at the Berlin-Weißensee School of Art/Diploma; 2000 training as a multi-media designer; 2001 teaching assignments at the Bremerhaven University of Applied Sciences and at the Academy of Visual Arts Leipzig; since 2002 research and artistic assistant at the University of Vechta, where she has been a professor since 2017.
Lives and works in Berlin and Vechta.

Scholarships and public purchases
Working scholarship at the Paul-Ernst-Wilke Atelier Bremerhaven | Scholarship holder at the Künstlerhaus Hooksiel | Working scholarship of the State of Lower Saxony | Guest scholarship at the Barkenhoff Worpswede | Working scholarship at the "Frans Masereel Centrum für Druckgrafik" in Kasterlee/Belgium Works in public possession and collections Skulpturensammlung Berlin-Friedrichshain | Kunstverleih Berlin-Friedrichshain | Landkreis Cuxhaven | Kunstverein Bremerhaven, Seestadt Bremerhaven | Koninklijk Museum voor Schone Kunsten/Antwerp/Belgium | Frans-Masereel Centrum Kasterlee/Belgium | Evangelisches Bildungszentrum Bad Bederkesa, Gemeinde Wangerland | Yerevan Armenia | Kunstverleih der Stadt Vechta | Firma Olfry Vechta | Oldenburgische Landesbank | Stadt Visbek, Gemeinde Goldenstedt

[r6_text icon="fa-map-marker"]Download invitation card[/r6_text]

"Von Traubeneichen und Kiefern" Irmgard Bornemann, impasto oil painting with tree bark collages Ellen Mäder-Gutz, wood sculptures Vernissage on Thursday, 18 May 2017 at 7 pm The artists will be present.
